The Cathedral is undoubtedly one of the greatest treasures of Santiago. Anyone who comes to the capital of Galicia has a mandatory appointment with this monument, one of the most important in our country. And now, the reasons for approaching the Cathedral are even greater.
A little more than a month ago the scaffolding of the Obradoiro façade was removed and finally, after years of work, visitors can see the most well-known face of the Cathedral of Santiago restored. The magic that comes from approaching the emblematic Obradoiro square to observe the baroque facade of the Cathedral is very difficult to describe. You have to live it!
But also, after almost ten years of restoration, the famous Portico de la Gloria is visible at last. The time has come to visit the famous sculptural ensemble of Mestre Mateo, one of the most important in Romanesque art and which has been fully recovered, bringing to light colors that had been hidden for decades.
The visits to the Porch will be organized in two phases: the first opens at the end of this month (foreseeably on the 27th at the expense of the finalization of the last works in the area) and will last until October and the second, starting in October, in which the Porch, although it will remain visitable, will have to be re-encapsulated to preserve the restoration works.
Now, from the end of the month, the access time to the Porch will be wide, from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. (interrupted during liturgical hours). They will be free visits, 15 minutes long and 25 people maximum, to continue caring for the newly restored space. These visits will begin on the monumental staircase of Obradoiro access to the Cathedral, and for them, only the order of arrival will be taken into account, so it will not be possible to book previously.
Regarding the second phase, the procedure is still being studied, although the current visit calendar is to be continued. A unique opportunity to contemplate one of the greatest treasures of Santiago, which had not been visited for years.
But also do not forget to get closer to other attractions of the Cathedral, such as climbing its roofs to see Santiago from above, see the flight of Botafumeiro or simply approach the Museum of the Cathedral, which houses real gems collected for many years. years.
