Every May 17, the Day of Galician Letters is celebrated in Galicia, a day that honors tribute to the writers who stood out for their literature in our language. This year, it is dedicated to Luísa Villalta, who joins the group of six women who have received this recognition, among whom is Rosalía de Castro, a poet closely linked to Padrón, as this is the place where she spent her last years.
From the Scala Hotel, with the purpose of honoring Rosalía de Castro and celebrating the Day of Galician Letters, we invite you to discover some of the places that marked the life of this writer in our town.
The first stop is the Church of Santa María a Maior de Iria Flavia, which is located less than two kilometers from Hotel Scala. Former Episcopal See, the basilica is one of the oldest in Galicia and, in it, Rosalía de Castro was buried from 1885 to 1891.
A few kilometers away, taking the national highway, is Juan Rodríguez Street. In this spot, the writer lived with her mother and siblings.
During the period in which the poetess lived in Padrón, she enjoyed walking along the Paseo de Montero, as it used to be called previously. Now, known as Paseo do Espolón, it houses a statue in honor of the author.
The next point on our tour is the Padrón Botanical Garden, inaugurated in 1869, it is considered one of the first in Spanish geography and has more than 300 species of trees. Who knows... perhaps, by visiting this park and appreciating the nature it houses, you will end up being inspired to write beautiful descriptions like Rosalía.
If you want to expand your knowledge about the writer, we encourage you to visit the Casa da Matanza, where the poetess lived with her husband and children until her last days in 1885. Now, the property has been restored and converted into a museum dedicated to the memory of Rosalía de Castro.
Before returning to the Hotel Scala, we invite you to stop and discover our Pazo Arretén, with a history linked to Rosalía de Castro's maternal family. The guided tour, available in several languages with prior reservation, includes a tasting and tasting a selection of cold pinchos.
And to conclude, what better way to end the day than by returning and resting at the Scala Hotel? In our rooms you will find the necessary comfort to enjoy Rosalía's verses. Reserve your room today!
