It was built with a defensive purpose, but finally it ended up turning into an agricultural residential complex in the 18th century. Nowadays it belongs to the Medinacelli dukes and presents a baroque style. Besides its gardens it counts on a chapel, an element that is always present in Galician manor houses.
It is located just half an hour from Hotel Scala, in the municipality of A Estrada. It is nicknamed by many as the Galician Versailles, not only for the building, but for its impressive garden. Pazo de Oca was declared Bien de Interés Cultural y Monumento Histórico-Artístico and has the oldest baroque garden in Galicia.
Manor house gardens belongs to The route of the camellia, and no wonder, as they have half a thousand varieties of this flower, some of them are the oldest in the continent. Moreover, now it is the best moment to visit them, since it is when the blooming of the camellias takes place.
It counts on numerous species: European oaks, Spanish chestnuts, English walnuts, palms… It is a vegetable paradise where stone and plants join another element: water. It has several streams and two big ponds (called Virtudes and Vanidades) with a stone rowboat in the middle of each one.
These gardens can be visited daily between 10:00 and 14:00 and from 15:00 to 19:00. To watch the interior of Pazo de Oca is needed previous reservation.
