Miradoiro de Gundián offers an incredible panoramic view of the Ulla river, that divides the provinces of A Coruña and Pontevedra. The other charm of the lookout are its wonderful views of the two bridges who cross the river and that are a vivid example of the Galician transport technological advance.
Gundián’s bridge, opened in 1958, belonged to the Zamora-A Coruña railway line, one of the greatest milestones in the 20th century for Galician transport. It was built out of stone on an iron frame and connects the two provinces in a narrowing called Paso da Cova.
Only meters away from the bridge is the high-speed railway viaduct, built in 2008. It is an architectonical work of great interest due to its length of more than 600 meters and its height of more than 100.
Apart from enjoying wonderful views, you can go up to the former Gundián’s bridge and feel the vertigo that its more than 80 meters height produce. You will walk on the tracks on which the train ran years ago.
At the other side of the river there is a recreational area where you can visit the Santuario da Virxe de Gundián, an 18th century chapel with a rectangular ground plan.
If you are looking for a panoramic view of the Ulla valley, you can go up to the Miradoiro do Alto do Castro. There, you will not only see the two bridges, but even the Pico Sacro at the back. These are unbeatable views very close to the Miradoiro de Gundián.
